At the end of May in the year 2016, I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. Three months later, I moved to Ann Arbor to begin a PhD program, also in Chemical Engineering, at the University of Michigan.
I spent my time at Cornell doing problem sets in Olin Hall, attending sports games with the pep band, getting roped into AAIV (Asian American InterVarsity) events, exploring Ithaca by foot and bike, and rock climbing and bouldering. I lived with several fabulously ridiculous people, bonded with my fellow ChemEs over midnight problem sets and finding the ChemE in our everyday lives, and interacted with many other great people. As a farewell, Ithaca poured on us during graduation.
I have one younger brother who attends the University of Chicago. My dad is also an engineer and we enjoy activities like having conversations about torque and the center of mass of the butter knife while eating breakfast. My mom has the job of making sure we’re all eating foods other than cereal for breakfast and wearing clean clothes.
In my “spare time,” I enjoy biking, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, soccer, playing the clarinet, reading, and dirt. I also like applesauce, yogurt, and peanut butter, but not celery or sushi with raw fish. I’m a fan of the New England Revolution, Jeopardy!, beer, The Lord of the Rings, Casio’s fx-300ES scientific calculator, long romantic walks, the periodic table, classical music, country music, and LEGO, among many other weird and wonderful things.
I write about my life as a college student. Sometimes I write about classes and Chemical Engineering. Sometimes I write about all the crazy things I do, including hiking in zero degree weather, hiking twenty miles in a day, and hiking off the beaten path. And sometimes I give my unsolicited opinions about what I’m reading, eating, or watching. Welcome to my Life as an Engineer.
